MLB teams classified as buyers, sellers and middle-of-road ahead of Aug. 3 trade deadline

With the trade deadline set for Aug. 3, analysts have grouped all 30 clubs into tiers ranging from aggressive buyers to likely sellers, noting each franchise’s playoff prospects and roster needs.

Major-league clubs have only a few days left to finalize trades before the deadline at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 3. Because the deadline can fall on any day between July 28 and Aug. 3, teams this season will have played about 112 games before the cutoff, giving front offices more data but fewer games to chase a postseason spot.

Analysts have sorted the 30 clubs into three tiers. The top-tier buyers include the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers, despite a star-laden roster, have dealt with injuries and underperforming hitters and may look to add depth if their rotation stays healthy. The Braves are seeking starting pitching to complement Chris Sale, while the Yankees, hampered by injuries to Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger, must decide whether to add batting or bullpen help. The Phillies, after a managerial change, are expected to pursue upgrades to address a top-heavy rotation, and the Red Sox have already made a trade for Curtis Mead after a mid-season surge. The Cubs, positioned for a postseason run, need pitching reinforcement to support a strong position-player core.

The second tier, described as “not in their DNA to go for it, but they should,” features the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays. Both clubs have historically succeeded with limited payrolls and now hold strong home records, giving them incentive to explore mid-season upgrades despite traditionally conservative approaches.

In the middle tier, teams such as the Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros are expected to make modest moves. The Tigers’ trade value for ace Tarik Skubal is a focal point, while the Pirates and White Sox may add pitching to complement their offensive strengths. The Rangers, Mariners and Astros each have specific needs—starting pitching for Texas, offense or bullpen help for Seattle, and outfield and pitching depth for Houston.

The “sell” tier includes clubs like the San Diego Padres, who are likely to remain buyers but could consider moving reliever Adrian Morejon, and the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels, both under new baseball-operations leadership and expected to evaluate trade options.

Finally, teams identified as clear sellers are the Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals. These clubs face challenging schedules and performance metrics, prompting them to consider moving players such as right-hander Brady Singer, catcher Tyler Stephenson and outfielder JJ Bleday.

Front offices will weigh immediate playoff chances against long-term asset management as the deadline approaches.
