Roommate says victim reported a stranger watching her before Idaho murders

Summary

Police interviews released in a documentary reveal that a surviving roommate said Kaylee Goncalves believed she was being watched before four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death by Bryan Kohberger in November 2022.

Police interview footage shown in a Netflix documentary about the 2022 University of Idaho killings includes testimony from Bethany Funke, who said her roommate Kaylee Goncalves told her she felt someone was staring at her outside her home before the murders. The incident occurred on Nov. 13, 2022 when 31-year-old Bryan Kohannan entered a house near the campus and stabbed Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xania Kernodle and Ethan Chapman.

Another roommate, Dylan Mortensen, recounted hearing Goncalves scream and run to a bathroom, followed by an unfamiliar male voice saying, "You’re gonna be ok. I’m gonna help you." Mortensen said she saw a man pass by the bedroom door before she and Funke locked themselves in a room and later called a friend to check on the other occupants. Police said it took eight hours before 911 was finally dialed.

Moscow Police Chief Anthony Dahlinger told the documentary that victims often delay calling emergency services because of shock and trauma. Kohannan later pleaded guilty and received four consecutive life sentences, avoiding a possible death-penalty trial.
