Fed Chair Warsh's silence fuels market uncertainty ahead of rate decision

Кратко

Federal Reserve officials are divided on whether to hold or raise rates as they await Chairman Kevin Warsh's post-meeting briefing, while recent inflation data and geopolitical tensions add to the ambiguity.

The Federal Reserve will announce its latest interest-rate decision at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday, followed by Chairman Kevin Warsh’s news conference at 2:30 p.m. ET. The timing comes after June’s consumer price index showed a sharp slowdown in inflation, largely driven by lower energy prices as tensions in the Middle East briefly eased.

Energy markets have since fluctuated, with a recent spike in global oil prices after renewed conflict in the region and a subsequent decline as shipping through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz remains constrained. At the same time, Fed officials are assessing how rapid AI adoption could affect price pressures.

Analysts note that the Fed’s lack of forward guidance this year has increased market volatility. “The Fed is looking at all these inflationary impulses and determining if they will be there over the longer term,” said Narayana Kocherlakota, a professor of economics at the University of Rochester and former Minneapolis Fed president. He added that the chair’s limited communication makes it “very difficult to know what the Fed is going to do in the next few months.”

Warsh has indicated he will move away from the traditional practice of forward guidance, a shift he outlined during his confirmation hearing in April. Some market strategists argue that the Fed’s frequent commentary in recent years may have become counterproductive. “We got to a point where the dissection of the Fed’s forward guidance was so acutely broken down into parts that I’m not sure it helped in the way it was meant to help either,” said Kezia Samuel, chief market strategist at AssetMark.

Fed Governor Christopher Waller reiterated that policymakers generally look through one-time price spikes, such as temporary oil price increases, when setting policy. However, officials warned that persistent price pressures could broaden beyond energy, threatening progress toward the 2 % inflation target. They continue to monitor core inflation measures that exclude food and energy, as well as market-based expectations, to gauge underlying trends.

Minutes from the June policy meeting highlighted concerns that strong demand for AI infrastructure could sustain upward pressure on technology product prices and electricity, potentially contributing to more persistent inflationary pressures.
