U.S. bans imports of foreign humanoid and quadruped robots over security concerns

摘要

The Trump administration announced a ban on new imports of Chinese-made humanoid and quadruped robots, citing national security and cybersecurity risks, while China warned of protectionist motives.

The United States announced on Tuesday that it will prohibit the import of new humanoid and quadruped robots, as well as related power converters, from foreign manufacturers, citing "unacceptable risks" to national security. The ban does not affect models already in use in the country.

The Federal Communications Commission said the devices could create supply-chain vulnerabilities and pose cybersecurity threats to critical infrastructure. A White House-convened interagency body determined that internet-connected robots might collect data that could be exploited by foreign intelligence services or be remotely commandeered.

China’s foreign ministry responded that the United States is abusing national-security rhetoric to suppress Chinese companies and pledged to take "necessary measures" to defend its interests. A spokesperson added that protectionism would harm American businesses and consumers.

Analysts noted that Chinese firms dominate the global humanoid-robot market, accounting for about 90% of shipments last year and holding the majority of top patent rankings. The ban arrives as several Chinese manufacturers, including Unitree, prepare for initial public offerings.

Industry observers said the restriction could temporarily reduce Chinese sales in the United States but is unlikely to significantly alter the sector’s growth, as many firms are already shifting focus to European markets. U.S. companies such as Tesla, Figure AI and Boston Dynamics may benefit from reduced competition.
