Wes Welker Assigned to Coach Washington Commanders Tight Ends

Resumen

The Washington Commanders have placed former All-Pro receiver Wes Welker in charge of coaching the team's tight ends after dismissing the previous position coach.

The Washington Commanders announced that former All-Pro wide receiver Wes Welker will assume responsibility for coaching the tight end group. Welker, who joined the franchise’s staff a year ago and was promoted to offensive assistant during the offseason, previously assisted with tight ends when the former coach Ben Steele was suspended following a DWI charge in Loudoun County. The team has not yet finalized Welker’s official title, but head coach Dan Quinn indicated he will oversee the position. Pass-game coordinator David Raih, who worked with the tight ends over the past two seasons, will continue his duties. Steele was pulled over early on June 7, refused breath and blood tests, and faces additional charges of resisting and obstruction without force, with a court date set for August 13. He was suspended for the last two voluntary spring practices and a three-day mandatory minicamp. Welker entered the Commanders organization as a personnel analyst in 2025 after being let go from his role as receivers coach with the Miami Dolphins, and he previously served as the San Francisco 49ers’ receivers coach from 2019 to 2021.
