2026 edition of the Tour de France recorded an average speed of 43.328 km/h, surpassing the previous record of 42.849 km/h set in 2025. The three-week race featured the fastest road stage and a record ascent of Alpe d’Huez, with eight stages completed at speeds above 45 km/h.

Data from Pro Cycling Stats show a steady rise in Tour speeds since 2020, climbing from 39.868 km/h to the current 43.328 km/h. Analysts attribute part of the acceleration to changes in nutrition, particularly increased carbohydrate intake. While earlier guidelines suggested 120 grams of carbs per hour (about 500 calories), several riders posted on social media that they consumed 140–160 grams per hour during the most demanding stages.

“This year was one of the toughest,” veteran rider Sepp Kuss said, noting that the intensity of racing, rather than the course profile, contributed to the difficulty.

Nutritionists note that higher carb consumption may aid recovery over the three-week event, even if it does not directly enhance performance in a single stage. In addition to fueling strategies, advances in bike, wheel, tire technology, aerodynamics, altitude and heat training, and data analytics have also supported faster racing.

The 2026 peloton included several newly financed teams—Lidl-Trek, Decathlon-CMA CGM, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, and the UAE Emirates-XRG squad—bringing larger budgets and deeper rosters to the competition. The increased resources are seen as contributing to a more competitive environment, with more riders aiming for stage victories.

Experts expect that continued investment in equipment, training, and nutrition will keep pushing average speeds higher in future editions of the Tour.
