Lifeguard and beachgoers rescue boy amid sudden surf at Santa Cruz beach
A lifeguard, aided by nearby beachgoers, pulled a boy to safety after a sudden swell at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, with no injuries reported.
A boy was rescued from rapidly rising surf at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz on Saturday after a sudden wave surge threatened his safety. Video captured a lifeguard battling the conditions to bring the child ashore, while two bystanders also assisted. The lifeguard was alerted by the bystanders, who reported the incident to the nearest lifeguard tower, prompting a rapid response.
Photographer Scott Vander Dussen, who recorded the event, said the ocean was calm before the waves increased dramatically. He described seeing the boy's head surface in the white foam and noted that another beachgoer observed the same.
"When the wave crashed, it left a white foam, and I could see a black dot, which was his head getting pulled out," Vander Dussen said.
"This video right here is an opportunity to showcase just how quickly things can turn, how incredibly brave and selfless the lifeguard team is," he added, also mentioning a legislative proposal to reclassify lifeguards as first responders.
Santa Cruz State Parks officials reported that lifeguards conducted 34 rescues over the weekend and made about 5,000 preventative contacts to avert further emergencies.
