NYC releases searchable database of wealthy property owners, sparking privacy concerns

Resumen

The city’s Department of Finance posted an online list of property owners who may be subject to a proposed non-primary residence tax, prompting criticism that the tool could expose affluent residents to harassment and safety risks.

New York City’s Department of Finance has made publicly available an online database that lists owners of non-primary residences potentially subject to a proposed "pied-à-terre" tax. The searchable tool shows names and addresses of properties that could fall under the surcharge, which the mayor’s administration says is required by state law to aid owners in determining liability and exemption eligibility.

A department spokesperson told Fox News Digital, "As per State law, a property roll was released for public inspection. From this list, DOF will identify properties that may be subject to the new non-primary residence property surcharge."

Critics argue that aggregating publicly available ownership records into a single, easily searchable platform creates new privacy and security risks for wealthy homeowners. Real Estate Board of New York President James Whelan said the database "illustrates how broadly the proposed tax could reach beyond the ultra-wealthy residents its supporters have emphasized" and added that publishing the list before the tax is enacted adds confusion.

Opponents also warned that the database could be misused by individuals seeking to harass property owners. "In this era of heightened political violence, this type of inflammatory and divisive rhetoric is not only reckless, but outright dangerous," said Republican strategist Colin Reed.

The mayor’s office did not respond to requests for comment on why the information was posted online rather than notifying owners privately, or whether a privacy review was conducted before release.
