Taco Bell offers $1 Mexican Pizza promotion amid lettuce outbreak
Taco Bell will sell its Mexican Pizza for $1 at participating locations on July 28, a one-day deal following a recent $1 Enchirito promotion and a decline in foot traffic linked to a lettuce-related cyclosporiasis outbreak.
Taco Bell announced on social media that its Mexican Pizza will be available for $1 at participating restaurants on July 28, with the price in effect until 11:59 p.m. PT. The item, which normally sells for $5.39 to $6.99, consists of beef and beans between two flour tortillas topped with sauce, cheese and diced tomatoes, and the promotion can be redeemed in-store or through the chain’s app, limited to one pizza per order.
The discount follows a $1 Enchirito offer that ran on July 22 and comes as the chain seeks to recover from a more than 30% drop in foot traffic reported by analytics firm Placer.ai for the period Jan. 1-July 6. The decline coincided with a nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak that was traced to lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms. Taco Bell said it had removed the affected lettuce from its supply chain.
"We have completed removal of affected Taylor Farms lettuce from our restaurants," the company said in a statement to USA TODAY, adding that it acted "out of an abundance of caution" after discussions with public health officials.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked the outbreak to nine states, with more than 11,500 cases reported this season. Health officials continue to evaluate additional reports as the true number of infections is believed to be higher than official counts.
