Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator's wife shot in Virginia, son arrested

Summary

Police say the wife of Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy was wounded in a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia, and her 27-year-old son was taken into custody on suspicion of malicious wounding and firearm offenses.

Police in Loudoun County, Virginia, discovered a woman with multiple gunshot wounds in the 2000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn on Sunday night. The victim is identified as the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Authorities arrested her 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, charging him with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He was booked into the county adult detention center and is being held without bond; officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said the injured woman is in stable condition. The team announced that passing game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and offensive line coach Andy Heck will assume additional responsibilities while Bieniemy attends to his family matters. A team spokesperson declined further comment, citing privacy concerns.

Eric Bieniemy, 56, is in his second tenure as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator, having previously led the offense from 2018 to 2022 and later serving in coaching roles with the Washington Commanders, UCLA and the Chicago Bears.
