Idaho murder convict seeks to withdraw guilty plea and pursue new trial
Bryan Kohberger, serving four life sentences for the 2022 University of Idaho killings, has filed a petition to vacate his guilty plea, asserting he was misled during the plea process.
Bryan Kohberger, the former criminology graduate student convicted of murdering four University of Idaho students in 2022, has filed a petition to set aside his guilty plea and request a new trial. In a prison interview with a national newspaper, Kohberger said the plea was based on "false promises" and "disinformation" and that he maintains an "absolute claim of innocence." He did not provide details about the evidence he believes supports his claim or specify the alleged errors in the plea negotiations. Kohberger is currently serving four consecutive life sentences.
"My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on false promises and blatant disinformation, must be withdrawn," he said in a statement to the newspaper. The petition will be reviewed by the Idaho Supreme Court, which must decide whether to allow the case to be reopened.
