Washington Commanders fire tight ends coach Ben Steele following DWI arrest

Résumé

The Commanders have terminated tight ends coach Ben Steele after his June 7 arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and related offenses.

Washington will begin training camp this week without tight ends coach Ben Steele, who was dismissed by the team on Monday. Virginia court records show Steele was arrested on June 7 for suspected driving while intoxicated and faced additional charges for refusing a field breath test, obstruction of arrest and failing to signal while changing course. The team said it would not comment further on the matter.

According to The Athletic, Steele was let go for violating team policy. He had previously served three seasons as the Arizona Cardinals' tight ends coach before joining Washington's staff in 2026. The Commanders' former tight ends coach, David Raih, was promoted to offensive pass-game coordinator after David Blough became offensive coordinator, leaving the position vacant.

NBC4 reported that Steele did not participate in the mandatory minicamp, with offensive assistant Wes Welker handling tight ends duties, and he was absent from the team's media availability on June 10. Head coach Dan Quinn is scheduled to address the media on Tuesday, where a replacement may be announced.
