Meta begins construction of $50 billion AI data center in Louisiana

Résumé

Meta is developing a $50 billion artificial-intelligence data center on about six square miles in Richland Parish, Louisiana, after months of confidential negotiations with state officials and energy providers.

Meta is constructing one of the world’s largest artificial-intelligence data centers in the northeast corner of Louisiana, covering roughly six square miles and costing an estimated $50 billion. The project, located in Richland Parish, was negotiated over nine months by executives from the state’s largest energy company, state and local officials, and Meta representatives before it was announced publicly.

According to reporting that included interviews with more than 40 sources and review of corporate filings, tax records and meeting transcripts, securing a reliable power supply was a primary driver of the site selection. Energy company officials initially approached Meta with the proposal, highlighting the region’s capacity to meet the data center’s substantial electricity needs.

The development has been described by some industry observers as a potential template for rapid, large-scale tech infrastructure projects, though officials emphasized that the secrecy surrounding the negotiations was intended to protect competitive and security interests.

"We are committed to working closely with Louisiana to ensure the project delivers economic benefits while meeting the region’s energy requirements," a Meta spokesperson said.

Local leaders indicated that the facility could generate significant tax revenue and job opportunities, but also noted the need for ongoing assessments of environmental and community impacts.
