The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is investigating a social-media video that appears to show a man kicking a protected sea lion at La Jolla Cove, while local officials have called for public assistance.

Federal wildlife authorities are examining a video that appears to show a man in a T-shirt and shorts approaching a sea lion on a seawall at La Jolla Cove and kicking the animal, with another person heard laughing. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement said it is investigating reports of the footage posted on social media and could not provide further details while the inquiry is ongoing.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said he had viewed the video and asked local police to review it, adding that the incident was unacceptable and that wildlife must be protected. The San Diego Police Department confirmed the federal investigation and urged anyone with information to contact NOAA.

Sea lions in California are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, which prohibits feeding, capturing, harming, killing, or harassing the animals. Violations can result in criminal penalties, including possible jail time. NOAA provided a hotline for tips related to the case.
