Assistant head coach Chris Foerster leads 49ers amid Kyle Shanahan's concussion

With head coach Kyle Shanahan sidelined by a severe concussion, assistant head coach Chris Foerster is overseeing the San Francisco 49ers' training camp, delegating responsibilities among the coaching staff.

Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster said he will run the San Francisco 49ers' training camp while head coach Kyle Shanahan recovers from a severe concussion sustained in a car accident. Foerster emphasized that the effort will be shared among the coaching staff rather than falling on a single individual.

"It’s really a group thing," Foerster told reporters. "The title puts me in this position, and I was very grateful that John and Kyle felt that some of the things I could take the lead on... but there’s other things, for example, our team meetings. Instead of me running every team meeting, we’ll split up on offense and defense and Raheem Morris and Klay Kubiak will do things. Maybe we’ll have Brant Boyer lead one and cover different things."

Foerster said the staff had discussed contingency plans before Shanahan’s injury and that coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris and special-teams coach Brant Boyer will assume additional duties. He added that Shanahan encouraged him to delegate as needed and expressed confidence in his leadership.

"Hey, you do whatever you want. I have a lot of confidence in you... you just do what you feel is right and lead that way," Foerster recounted Shanahan saying.

Foerster began delegating team meetings on Sunday, assigning separate sessions for offense and defense, and indicated the approach will be adjusted as the situation evolves. The length of Shanahan’s absence remains uncertain, depending on his concussion recovery.
