Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" pulls in $87 million in second weekend

Resumen

"The Odyssey" earned $87 million in North American theaters during its second weekend, a 30% decline from its opening, while global receipts reached an estimated $639.6 million.

"The Odyssey" generated $87 million in ticket sales across U.S. and Canadian theaters for its second weekend, according to studio estimates released Sunday. The figure represents a 30% drop from the film's opening weekend, marking the smallest second-weekend decline for a recent blockbuster and the best second-weekend performance for a Christopher Nolan film on a non-inflation-adjusted basis.

"That would be an impressive opening weekend for any film," said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak. "This is a testament to the outpouring of excitement and enthusiasm that moviegoers are having for Christopher Nolan’s latest epic."

Internationally, the movie added $128.3 million, bringing its worldwide total to roughly $639.6 million. Premium large-format venues, especially IMAX, contributed significantly, with IMAX earnings of $48 million worldwide and $5.2 million from the limited 70 mm IMAX screens.

The film faced little new competition this weekend, though the upcoming release of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is expected to draw sizable audiences. Disney’s "Moana" and "Toy Story 5" occupied the second and third domestic spots with $10.5 million and $10 million respectively, the latter surpassing $1 billion in cumulative global revenue. Other releases in the top ten included "Hadestown: The Musical," "The Invite," and "Evil Dead Burn."

Overall summer box-office receipts have exceeded $3 billion to date, about 10% higher than the same period last year, though still below pre-pandemic levels. Analysts noted that sustained performance by "The Odyssey" could help the season approach previous annual totals.
