Rich Paul Says LeBron James Delayed Free-Agency Decision Until Early Friday Morning
Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul explained that James weighed offers from four teams before choosing Philadelphia, a decision influenced by recent trades and his relationship with guard Tyrese Maxey.
Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told Max Kellerman on the "Game Over" podcast that LeBron James did not finalize his free-agency destination until 1 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday. The NBA star considered offers from the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors before settling on the Sixers.
Paul said James struggled with the emotional pull of leaving both Miami and Cleveland, noting the appeal of playing alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. He added that the Sixers' acquisition of Jaylen Brown on July 1 shifted the team's competitive outlook, making the franchise appear more viable in the Eastern Conference.
The agent also highlighted James' friendship with Tyrese Maxey, a fellow Klutch client, as a factor that could ease the transition. Paul speculated that James could serve as a secondary play-maker, enhancing the pick-and-roll dynamics for Maxey and other teammates, and suggested that coach Nick Nurse might adapt strategies used by former Cavaliers coach Ty Lue.
While the Minnesota Timberwolves were reportedly in the mix early, Paul said they fell off James' shortlist as he narrowed his options to the final four teams. He concluded that James is satisfied with his choice and expects Philadelphia to welcome him warmly.
