Rams coach says Aaron Donald undergoing strict regimen as he weighs unretirement

Summary

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay said former defensive tackle Aaron Donald is following a disciplined training program to determine if he will return to the NFL this season.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay said former defensive tackle Aaron Donald is engaged in a "very strict, regimented process" as he evaluates a possible comeback after retiring in March. McVay added that if Donald decides to return, the team will work to make it happen.

Donald, a ten-year veteran of the league, retired following the 2023 season. The Rams' June trade for Myles Garrett sparked speculation about Donald rejoining the defensive line alongside the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

"For those of you who know Aaron, he's very diligent. Anything that he does, he does all-in," McVay said, noting that Donald's current routine mirrors the preparation he used while playing.

McVay said he does not know the former star's decision, but indicated that Donald will assess his body’s response to training before determining whether he can handle the demands of an NFL season.

"If he feels good, then you guys know he's going to be ready to rock," the coach said, emphasizing that the choice rests with Donald and that the team is respecting his timeline.

The coach first addressed the issue on the opening day of training camp at Loyola Marymount University, where the roster also included wide receiver Puka Nacua, who is expected to practice as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
