Packers CEO warns of financial adjustments needed to stay competitive

Résumé

Green Bay Packers president and CEO Ed Policy said the publicly owned franchise may need to boost revenue and consider new financing options as operating costs rise and other NFL teams tap capital sources.

Green Bay Packers president and chief executive Ed Policy said the organization may need to make financial adjustments to remain competitive in the NFL. The comments came as the team released its 2026 fiscal year financials, showing an operating loss of $1.1 million—the first non-pandemic year loss since 1990—while net income rose 54.8% to $132.5 million, driven by $133.6 million in non-operating revenue from corporate investments and a share of ESPN’s purchase of NFL Network.

The Packers reported $753 million in revenue, up 4.7%, against $754.1 million in expenses, an 18.7% increase. Policy attributed the expense rise largely to a $130 million jump in player costs, including a four-year, $188 million contract for edge rusher Micah Parsons and accelerated payments to traded players.

"We’re going to have to be more aggressive with revenue generation going forward," Policy said. "The cost of competing in the NFL is going up, and other teams have access to capital sources that we just don’t have."

Policy noted that many NFL franchises can sell minority equity stakes without relinquishing control, a financing option unavailable to the Packers under their public-ownership structure. He said the team has no plans to sell naming rights to Lambeau Field but is open to such deals for the practice facility, and highlighted a recent sponsorship that renamed the Titletown field.

The organization is also expanding non-football events at Lambeau Field, including concerts and the upcoming Notre Dame-Wisconsin game, to diversify revenue streams.

"I feel very good about the Packers’ financial strength and condition in the medium term and the short term," Policy added, while emphasizing the need to monitor long-term trends and ensure the ability to invest in players, staff, and facilities.
