LeBron James signs two-year, $8 million deal with Philadelphia 76ers

LeBron James announced Friday that he will not return to Cleveland or Miami, opting instead to sign a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers that includes a player option for the second year and is valued at $8 million, the league’s veteran minimum. The deal makes James the seventh-highest paid player on a roster that already features All-NBA talent such as Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown.

Analysts note that James’ per-possession impact this season aligns with other veteran forwards who command substantially higher salaries, suggesting the 76ers secured a significant discount. Despite a decline in usage and minutes, James posted a 59 % true-shooting percentage and averaged 7.2 assists per game, indicating he can still contribute effectively in a secondary offensive role.

"LeBron James will make Philadelphia’s offense better by adding elite playmaking and experience," said ESPN analyst Zach Kram.

The addition is expected to complement the 76ers’ existing stars, with James’ passing ability and experience enhancing ball movement, while his defensive positioning is likely to be managed to preserve health. The move also reshapes the competitive landscape in the Eastern Conference, giving Philadelphia a clearer path to the playoffs compared with rivals such as the New York Knicks.

The signing leaves several other teams as the primary losers. Miami, which had been seeking an additional playmaker, missed the opportunity to add James, while the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors have moved on without him. James’ contract, far below his recent earnings, underscores his stated focus on competing for another championship rather than maximizing salary.
