Four Palestinians and one Israeli killed in clashes near Tal, West Bank
Violent clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the town of Tal southwest of Nablus resulted in four Palestinian deaths, one Israeli death and several injuries, prompting a security cordon around the area.
Four Palestinians were killed and four others injured, three critically, during a confrontation between Israeli settlers and residents of the West Bank town of Tal, located near the settlement of Havat Gilad, on Friday. Israeli health officials reported that one Israeli settler also died and two others were evacuated by helicopter.
According to local sources, about 25 to 30 settlers entered the eastern part of Tal, attempted to breach two houses and opened fire when residents confronted them. The violence spread to the western part of the town, where a child was reportedly hit. Israeli military troops arrived and engaged in shooting alongside the settlers, the local Fatah leader Essam Saifi told Reuters.
The Israeli army said it dispatched forces after an alleged attack on Israelis hiking in the area, claiming a Palestinian had taken a weapon from security personnel and fired at the settlers. Magen David Adom confirmed the Israeli fatality and the evacuation of two wounded persons by helicopter.
Following the incident, Israeli forces imposed a security cordon around Nablus and Tal, closing checkpoints leading to the town. The Palestinian Ministry of Health said the deaths bring the total number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank to 86 this year, including 21 shot by settlers. The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the killings, describing them as a "renewed image of the ongoing Nakba."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced an emergency meeting to discuss a response, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich urged the army to act with an "iron fist" in the area.
"The people of the farms and the heroic settlement pioneers are the defensive wall of the State of Israel," Smotrich wrote on social media.
The incident has heightened tensions in the region, with both sides accusing the other of provocation and excessive force.
