Support for Trump’s Iran Conflict Declines Among Core Base, Polls Show

Resumen

Recent polls indicate that a growing share of self-identified MAGA supporters consider President Trump’s war with Iran too costly, while broader public opinion remains largely opposed to the conflict.

A new Politico poll released Wednesday found that the proportion of self-identified MAGA supporters who view President Donald Trump’s war with Iran as worth its economic costs fell by 13 percentage points over the past two months, and 57% said the conflict contributed to higher gas prices. The same poll showed a majority of respondents blaming the president for the price increases.

Interviews conducted by MS NOW at a North Carolina gas station with three longtime Trump voters revealed similar sentiments: one described the war as “taxing on everyone,” another said the president “shouldn’t have gotten us into this war,” and a third expressed feeling “angry” and “disillusioned.”

Nationally, a Washington Post-Ipsos survey reported that 68% of Americans do not consider the conflict worth fighting, while only 28% expressed support.

Amid the declining backing, President Trump told reporters that “Americans aren’t against the war,” citing a poll that he said confirmed public approval. On social media, he warned that any Iranian attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz would prompt the United States to target a bridge or power plant in Tehran.

The administration also announced an agreement to provide Saudi Arabia with a civilian nuclear program, a move analysts say could be aimed at maintaining regional partnerships as Saudi support for the war appears to have weakened.

Critics note that the president’s recent remarks and actions, including a social-media post comparing U.S. war casualties to other conflicts and remarks made during a campaign stop in Georgia, have done little to reverse the waning enthusiasm for the Iran operation among both his base and the broader electorate.
