FDA opens investigation into new Cyclospora outbreak with 72 cases identified

Resumen

The Food and Drug Administration announced a sixth Cyclospora outbreak investigation this year, reporting 72 cases while providing no details on locations or sources.

The Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that it is investigating a new outbreak of Cyclospora, a foodborne parasite that causes watery diarrhea, after identifying 72 cases. The agency did not disclose where the cases were found or what foods might be involved, and indicated that a traceback investigation is under way.

This is the sixth Cyclospora investigation the FDA has opened in 2024. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded more than 11,500 Cyclospora cases across 41 states this year, including 4,173 confirmed infections and over 7,400 probable ones, resulting in 308 hospitalizations and no reported deaths. The current tally far exceeds the typical annual U.S. total of 2,000 to 5,000 cases.

Earlier outbreaks have been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce grown in Mexico and distributed by Taylor Farms, which was served at several fast-food chains and sold in multiple states. A recall of the lettuce was issued, but the notice lacked specific details about retail locations.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has expressed anti-vaccine views, said the national surge in cases was “under control.” The Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the FDA and CDC, did not respond to requests for comment.

The FDA is also handling ten other foodborne illness investigations involving pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Clostridium botulinum and Listeria monocytogenes, amid ongoing budget and staffing constraints.
