Odysseus myth resurfaces in museum collections after new film release

摘要

The debut of Christopher Nolan's adaptation of the Odyssey has sparked renewed attention to ancient artworks depicting the hero's journey, with scholars noting the story's enduring appeal across media.

The recent release of Christopher Nolan's film based on the Odyssey has led to a surge in public interest in the ancient tale of King Odysseus and his decade-long return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Scholars say the story endures because its protagonist is portrayed as a clever human rather than a demigod. > "He’s not the son of gods; he’s not the son of a goddess. He doesn’t have special powers — he’s just really smart," said Joel Christensen, a classics professor at the City University of New York.

Museum curators note that the narrative appears on a wide range of artifacts, from pottery to metalwork. > "You have it on vases, you have it in silver, you have it in wall paintings, you have it on gems, you have it in sculpture," said Kenneth Lapatin, curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Christensen likened the Odyssey’s cultural legacy to a layered manuscript, suggesting that each new interpretation adds to, yet does not erase, earlier ones. > "The story of ‘The Odyssey’ is like a palimpsest manuscript. It keeps getting written and overwritten again, but you can see underneath the other stories."
