Cole Hauser Discusses Production Challenges on 'Dutton Ranch' Without Creator Taylor Sheridan
Actor Cole Hauser said filming the Yellowstone spinoff was difficult without creator Taylor Sheridan on set, while co-star Ed Harris recently criticized his role in the series.
Cole Hauser said the production of the Yellowstone spinoff "Dutton Ranch" faced significant hurdles after creator Taylor Sheridan stepped back from day-to-day involvement and served only as executive producer. Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, told FilmInside that the absence of Sheridan altered the workflow, leaving a small core group—including Finn Little’s character Carter, director Christina Voros, co-star Kelly Reilly and himself—to navigate new writers and directors.
He described the situation as a challenge he embraced, noting the cast and crew had to “put my head down and work my ass off with what I had around me.” Hauser added that external expectations about the series’ success were not evident during filming and expressed pride in what the team accomplished, saying he looks forward to returning.
"Everything had changed," Hauser said, referring to Sheridan’s shift in role.
"Not having Taylor there … the only normality that we had whatsoever was [Finn Little’s character], Carter, [director] Christina [Alexandra Voros], [my co-star] Kelly [Reilly] and myself," he explained.
Season two is slated to begin production in January. Meanwhile, co-star Ed Harris, who plays Everett McKinney, recently voiced frustration in a Variety interview, claiming he was misled about the prominence of his role and describing himself as underused. Harris did not mention Sheridan in his remarks.
Sheridan, who created the original Yellowstone series in 2018, remains credited as executive producer on the spinoff, which debuted in May.
