HBO Max launches "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" as a new spin-off of The Big Bang Theory

Résumé

The streaming service debuted a ten-episode comedy series starring Kevin Sussman, created by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn, that departs from the original sitcom’s format and tone.

HBO Max released the first episode of "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" on Thursday, adding another entry to the franchise that began with "The Big Bang Theory" in 2007. The new series follows comic-store owner Stuart (Kevin Sussman), his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist Bert (Brian Posehn) and physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie) as they encounter a series of science-fiction mishaps that send them into alternate realities.

The show is produced by the original creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, with Marvel veteran screenwriter Zak Penn joining the team. Unlike its predecessor, which relied on a static living-room setting, the spin-off emphasizes rapid plot shifts, improvisational dialogue and a variety of fantastical scenarios, ranging from centaurs to telepathic characters.

Each episode opens with a new appeal from the creators, set to an original Danny Elfman composition, encouraging viewers to watch without skipping. The series also marks a shift in casting, featuring supporting actors from the original sitcom rather than the main cast.

Critics note that the program does not meet the Bechdel test and lacks racial diversity among its principal characters. Nonetheless, the faster-paced storytelling and experimental premise represent a clear departure from the slower, dialogue-driven style of the original series.

"I have spent almost forty years writing scenes in which a small group of people sit on a couch and exchange witty banter. … I just couldn’t do the couch thing anymore. I had to try something else," a vanity card from Chuck Lorre read at the end of the premiere episode.

The series aims to refresh the sitcom format while retaining ties to the original universe, though its long-term impact on the franchise remains uncertain.
