President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed commander Oleksandr Syrskyi and appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi after firing Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov sparked public demonstrations demanding his reinstatement.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy removed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, prompting street protests that quickly turned against army commander Oleksandr Syrskyi. Demonstrators called for Fedorov's return and criticized Syrskyi's leadership, leading the president to dismiss the commander and name Mykhailo Drapatyi, a battlefield veteran known for his role after the 2014 Russian invasion, as the new chief of staff.

Analysts say Drapatyi represents a younger generation of officers whose credibility stems from combat experience rather than Soviet-era training. > "He enjoys a high level of trust within the military. I think this appointment could boost what is often called morale, that is, strengthen the fighting spirit," said Kyiv-based military analyst Oleksandr Musiienko.

The conflict between Fedorov and Syrskyi was described by a Western defense official as a clash of "different planets," reflecting Fedorov's data-driven, technology-focused approach versus Syrskyi's traditional ground-force doctrine. Musiienko added that Drapatyi has shown an ability to adapt to modern warfare and to reallocate resources as conditions change.

Public anger toward Syrskyi also stemmed from his association with the 425th Separate Assault Regiment, which faced allegations of abuse and high casualty rates. The scandal prompted an investigation and the suspension of the regiment's commander, intensifying scrutiny of Ukraine's military command culture.

Some lawmakers view the episode as evidence of democratic accountability despite martial law, while others warn that reliance on street protests to influence senior appointments could set a risky precedent. Tetiana Shevchuk of the Anti-Corruption Action Center noted that protests are a rare outlet for public voice in the current political climate, but cautioned that such a pattern is not a healthy long-term solution.

Support for Fedorov reflects broader public backing for his reform agenda, which emphasized preserving soldiers' lives, modernizing equipment, and improving service conditions. During his six-month tenure, he redirected funds toward long-range strike systems, drones, and air-defense upgrades, and proposed higher pay and greater flexibility for frontline troops.

The political drama remains unresolved, as Fedorov has indicated he will not accept another post unless reinstated as defense minister, a demand echoed by many protesters. His future role could influence the direction of Ukraine's ongoing military reforms.
