A Madison police officer shot and killed a man who had wounded the officer with a knife while resisting arrest on a city street near the state Capitol, police chief John Patterson said. The incident was captured on a cellphone video that showed three gunshots and onlookers in the busy neighborhood. Police were responding to reports of someone trying to break into parked cars; the suspect fled on a bike, fell or was forced off, and during the ensuing struggle produced a knife that injured an officer. A taser was deployed but failed to stop the suspect, and the injured officer then fired his weapon, killing the man, who later died at a hospital. Another officer was also injured, while two remained unharmed. The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation will conduct a probe. Community advocates expressed concern, noting the victim was Black and that the shooting was witnessed by residents.
