House Republicans Advance $95 Billion Budget Package Covering Iran Conflict and Trump Priorities

The House passed a budget reconciliation measure allocating $95 billion for defense, agriculture, and voting-law initiatives, while Democrats criticized the spending and Senate leaders signaled uncertainty about its passage.

The House Republican leadership moved a $95 billion budget reconciliation package that includes $60 billion for the Pentagon, $13 billion for other national-security programs, $12 billion for agricultural assistance, and $10 billion for voting-law changes tied to the SAVE America Act. The measure, which would bypass a Senate filibuster, is intended to fund ongoing U.S. military operations against Iran and other Trump-aligned priorities.

Democratic leaders objected, arguing the funds would be better used for domestic needs. > "Republicans plan to spend tens of billions of dollars on Trump's failed war in Iran," said Rep. Pete Aguilar, chair of the House Democratic caucus. > "Republicans have literally ripped food from the mouths of hungry children, seniors and veterans to sustain the Trump war machine," added House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Republican officials defended the proposal as essential for national security. > "No matter how you feel about current events, these funds are necessary to ensure our fighting forces remain ready, our troops are paid and our nation is safe," said Rep. Mike Rogers, chair of the Armed Services Committee.

The budget resolution now heads to the Senate, where Majority Leader John Thune indicated he will first focus on a short-term continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown. Thune said the House package could be used later in the fall if needed, but he expressed uncertainty about its prospects. The Senate’s stance on the voting-law component remains unclear, with some members questioning its necessity.

If approved, the reconciliation process would allow the measure to pass the House with a simple majority, but it still requires Senate approval before any spending can occur.
