Detroit Tigers weigh options on Tarik Skubal amid luxury-tax considerations

Résumé

The Tigers must decide whether to retain Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal or trade him before the deadline, a choice complicated by the team's luxury-tax position and potential draft-pick compensation.

Detroit is facing a critical decision before the July 3 trade deadline: keep reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal and pursue a postseason run, or trade the pitcher for prospects and future assets. The team has improved since early May, posting a 25-16 record from June onward, and sits within striking distance of the division leaders, but the outcome of the next dozen games will influence the front office's strategy.

Baseball operations president Scott Harris will consider the upcoming schedule, which includes a final game against the Chicago Cubs followed by ten games largely against teams with losing records, including four against the Kansas City Royals, who will be without MVP candidate Bobby Witt Jr. due to injury.

Analysts Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported that a potential trade for Skubal could involve acquiring a controllable starter such as Emmet Sheehan, Will Warren, Ryan Weathers, Andrew Painter or a young arm from Atlanta, though such a move would likely reduce Detroit's chances of a deep playoff run this season.

A less-discussed factor is the Tigers' luxury-tax status. If Skubal signs elsewhere for more than $50 million, the team would receive a draft pick after the fourth round rather than a first-round pick, representing a loss of roughly $2.6 million in draft-pool value. Current payroll estimates place Detroit about $1.64 million over the tax threshold, resulting in a modest tax bill but potentially higher costs if the team exceeds the $244 million limit.

To retain Skubal while staying under the tax line, Detroit may need to shed salary from other contracts. Relievers Kenley Jansen ($11 million luxury-tax hit) and Kyle Finnegan ($9.5 million hit) are cited as possible trade candidates, along with other players on lower-value contracts.

The organization is expected to evaluate these options closely as the season progresses, balancing roster improvements with financial constraints.
