NYC Mayor Mamdani Says He Lacks Authority to Arrest Netanyahu
Mayor Zohran Mamdani acknowledged that New York City cannot enforce an International Criminal Court warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while urging federal action.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city does not have the legal power to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, despite previously describing the leader as a "war criminal" and supporting the International Criminal Court's warrant. In a video posted on X that attracted millions of views, Mamdani explained that only the federal government could act on the warrant if Netanyahu were to visit the city.
"Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large," Mamdani said in the video.
He added that his interest in enforcing the warrant applies to any individual subject to ICC charges for war crimes or crimes against humanity. At a press conference, Mamdani emphasized the right to protest and expressed understanding for Palestinian New Yorkers who are disappointed by the inability to detain the Israeli leader.
"I will not be welcoming Benjamin Netanyahu or any other war criminals when they come to this city," he said, calling on the federal government to join the ICC in ensuring accountability.
Conservative politicians and commentators criticized Mamdani's statements, arguing that the United States does not recognize the ICC warrant and that his remarks constitute political theater.
