President Trump Dismisses Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Following Revised Employment Data
President Trump has dismissed Erika McEntarfer, Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, after the release of employment data showing weaker job growth and significant downward revisions for May and June.
President Donald Trump has dismissed Erika McEntarfer, Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), following the release of employment data indicating weaker job growth and significant downward revisions for May and June. The July report revealed the addition of 73,000 jobs, falling short of expectations, and revised previous months' figures downward by 258,000 jobs.
President Trump announced the dismissal on social media, stating, "No one can be that wrong? We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY." He further alleged, without evidence, that the jobs numbers were "RIGGED" to make Republicans and himself look bad.
Economists and policy experts have expressed concern that this action could undermine the integrity of economic data from a trusted federal agency. Lily Roberts, managing director for Inclusive Growth at the Center for American Progress, commented, "The data he wants to hide is produced by nonpartisan economists who have been doing this work for decades. Politicizing our country's collection of data on what's going on in the economy could shake markets that rely on unbiased information."
Revisions to employment data are common as the BLS updates previous reports based on additional information. The recent downward revisions were attributed to routine incorporation of additional or corrected sample data that came in after the initial release.
Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski will serve as acting commissioner during the search for a permanent replacement.
