Audiences Favor Practical Effects Over CGI in 2026 Releases

Ամփոփում

Box-office successes this year, such as "Project Hail Mary" and "The Odyssey," have drawn praise for extensive use of practical effects, while several franchise films faced criticism for heavy reliance on computer-generated imagery.

Box-office data for 2026 show that movies emphasizing practical effects and on-location shooting are resonating with viewers. Films including "Project Hail Mary" ($683 million), "The Odyssey" ($264 million and still climbing), "Backrooms" ($384 million) and "Obsession" ($442 million) all highlighted their analog production methods in marketing campaigns. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller noted the absence of green screens on the set of "Project Hail Mary," while Christopher Nolan said the production of "The Odyssey" pushed the limits of stamina for cast and crew because of its reliance on real locations and avoidance of CGI set extensions.

Even low-budget projects have followed the trend; the "Backrooms" team constructed extensive physical sets on a $10 million budget, and Curry Barker’s $750,000 "Obsession" relied on practical techniques to create its scares. Nolan remarked, "I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina. I mean, it’s The Odyssey, of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn’t seem difficult."

In contrast, several high-profile franchise releases, including "Masters of the Universe," "Supergirl," and the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday," have been criticized for trailers that appear overly dependent on CGI, prompting negative reactions on social media. The criticism extends to recent live-action adaptations such as "Moana," where audiences questioned the authenticity of the visual effects.

Industry observers note that the current preference for tangible, handcrafted filmmaking aligns with broader audience fatigue toward heavily digitized productions, especially as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent. The shift also coincides with a rise in non-franchise films among the year’s top domestic box-office performers, suggesting that compelling original stories paired with visible production effort may be gaining market share.
