New "Big Bang Theory" Spin-Off "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" Debuts on HBO Max
The first continuation of the original series premiered on July 23 on HBO Max, following comic-store owner Stuart and his friends as they travel the multiverse.
The latest "Big Bang Theory" spin-off, titled "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," premiered on Thursday, July 23, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max. The series follows comic-book store owner Stuart, his girlfriend Denise, geologist Bert and physicist Kripke as they move through alternate realities in an effort to prevent a collapse of reality.
The show opens in a post-apocalyptic version of Pasadena where the Comic Center remains intact. An alternate-universe version of Stuart informs the group that a machine built by Leonard, Sheldon and Howard could restore reality, prompting the quartet to embark on a multiverse quest.
Kevin Sussman reprises Stuart, delivering deadpan humor, while Brian Posehn appears as Bert, providing a steady counterpoint. John Ross Bowie returns as Barry Kripke, and Lauren Lapkus plays Denise, whose character varies across episodes. Guest appearances from former "Big Bang Theory" cast members occur, but are presented as optional, non-canonical cameos that serve the episode’s plot.
Co-creators Zak Penn, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady incorporate sci-fi elements such as alternate-universe AI, sorceresses and war-torn worlds, using the multiverse concept to explore familiar characters in new settings. Production design changes with each reality, altering set details like wall art and figurines.
The series marks the franchise’s first streaming release, allowing a single-camera format and R-rated humor not possible in the network versions. It continues the evolution of the franchise, which has previously expanded through the prequel "Young Sheldon" and the multi-camera sitcom "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage."
