HBO Max launches "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," a sci-fi spin-off of The Big Bang Theory

Summary

The new streaming series follows comic-book store owner Stuart as he travels through alternate dimensions to stop an apocalypse, marking a genre shift for the franchise.

HBO Max debuted "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," the third spin-off of the long-running sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Unlike earlier extensions that revisited characters' pasts, the series places Kevin Sussman's Stuart in a science-fiction setting, where he and geologist Bert, played by Brian Posehn, jump between alternate realities to reverse a world-ending event. The premise involves a device that transports the duo to a different dimension each episode, allowing the show to explore settings ranging from a steampunk-styled wasteland to a society of bovine-evolved humans.

The production brings in sci-fi veteran Zak Penn, known for "X-Men: The Last Stand," to collaborate with series co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. Returning cast members include John Ross Bowie as Kripke, now depicted as a warlord, and Lauren Lapkus as Stuart’s ex-girlfriend Denise, completing the core group that anchors the narrative amid the shifting worlds.

"Stuart Fails" takes a “far-cry” from the original sitcom’s apartment-based humor, integrating elements such as zombies, giant flying moths and magical abilities, according to the show’s creators.

The series is the first Big Bang franchise entry to premiere on a streaming platform rather than broadcast television, signaling a new direction for the brand.
