Spain midfielder Gavi says Argentina players should avoid FIFA sanctions after World Cup final clash

Résumé

Spain's Gavi expressed the view that Argentine players involved in post-match incidents should not face suspensions, noting the altercation was part of football's physical nature.

Spain midfielder Gavi, an unused substitute in his country's 1-0 extra-time victory, told reporters on Tuesday that he does not believe Argentine players involved in the post-match confrontation should be suspended by FIFA. The incident occurred after the World Cup final when Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes pushed Gavi to the ground after Gavi intervened to protect teammate Eric García, who had earlier been grabbed by the throat. Video also showed Paredes and Nahuel Molina striking García and Rodri, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala appeared to hit Dani Olmo.

"No, to be honest, I don't think they should be suspended," Gavi said.

"I realize it doesn't set a good example for the children, but there's also that side to football that's a bit more violent."

"Perhaps the most logical thing, in my view, would be to send him off during the match and leave it at that, but as I say, at the end of the day I think it's all part of football and that's just the way it has to be."

Argentina finished the match with only one player, Enzo Fernández, sent off after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time. The team received a guard of honor from Spain before the medal ceremony, though Argentine players turned away as Spain lifted the trophy.
