Oklahoma health officials report 172 cyclosporiasis cases

Résumé

The Oklahoma State Department of Health said 172 cases of cyclosporiasis have been identified, including 12 hospitalizations, with no deaths reported.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health announced Tuesday that a total of 172 cyclosporiasis cases have been identified in the state, up from 56 cases reported the previous week. Laboratory testing confirmed 170 cases, while two additional probable cases were linked to exposure to a contaminated product.

"Twelve patients have been hospitalized, but there have been no deaths," the department said.

The median age of those infected is 40, and women represent 55% of the cases. The outbreak has more than tripled in size since the earlier report, which initially listed 116 cases.

Cyclosporiasis, caused by the Cyclospora parasite, typically spreads through consumption of unwashed fresh produce and leads to watery diarrhea, fatigue, nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. The illness is seasonal, with cases rising in the spring and summer months, and the current season runs from May 1 to August 31.

Health officials note that while most infections resolve within days, severe or persistent cases may require antibiotic treatment.
