Eagle Jackie Stabilizes After Rescue Following Conflict with Other Birds

Résumé

Jackie, the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam eagle, is recovering at Ojai Raptor Center after an altercation with two subadult eagles left her weak and underweight.

Jackie, the adult eagle featured on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, is recovering at the Ojai Raptor Center after being rescued following an encounter with two younger eagles on July 17. The bird was found on the ground near Dana Point Park and was taken to the rehabilitation facility on July 18.

Friends of Big Bear Valley's Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam (FOBBV) reported on July 20 that Jackie remains underweight but alert, perching and eating with assistance while a full medical assessment, including bloodwork and toxicology, is pending. The center described her as "weak and vulnerable" and noted no obvious signs of physical trauma.

"We do want to say thank you to all who helped Jackie," FOBBV said in a Facebook post.

Local residents, visitors, and a San Bernardino County fire crew guarded the eagle overnight until San Dimas Raptor Rescue arrived around 2 a.m. to transport her to the rehabilitation center.

The incident followed several days during which Jackie was not seen at her nest, which is livestreamed online and has attracted a long-term audience. Her partner, Shadow, and their fledged eaglets, Sandy and Luna, have been part of the popular nest cam since 2016.

Jackie's condition is described as stable, and staff at Ojai Raptor Center expect diagnostic results in the coming days to guide further treatment.
