Journey keyboardist urges Bruce Springsteen to stay out of politics

Summary

Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain criticized Bruce Springsteen for expressing political views during a podcast, calling the singer’s commentary “annoying” and urging him to focus on music.

Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain told listeners on Tom Barnard’s Complete Disaster Network podcast that he believes entertainers should keep politics separate from their art. Cain, who describes himself as a “diehard conservative,” said Bruce Springsteen should “shut up” about his political opinions and added that other celebrities, including Robert De Niro, should do the same.

Cain said he tries to avoid political statements in his own performances, noting, "I don’t preach it on stage. I don’t spend 10 minutes talking about it." He also questioned Springsteen’s use of the song “Born in the USA,” suggesting the lyrics could be interpreted as critical of the United States.

Springsteen has publicly criticized President Donald Trump during his recent Land of Hope & Dreams tour and has highlighted anti-ICE protests, but did not respond to Cain’s remarks. Cain, a longtime member of Journey, is married to televangelist Paula White-Cain, who serves as a spiritual adviser to Trump. He referenced fellow conservative musicians Ted Nugent and Kid Rock, describing them as a small group of “patriots" in the rock scene.
