Israeli airstrikes in Gaza kill 12, including a family of six, medics report

Summary

Local medical sources say three Israeli attacks in Gaza on Tuesday killed at least 12 Palestinians, among them a family of six, while the Israeli military said it was targeting a Hamas operative.

Local medics said three Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday resulted in at least 12 Palestinian deaths, including a family of six. The brother of Firas al-Masri told reporters that his sibling, his wife Salsabeel and their four children – Faryal, Salma, Amira and Naim – were burned to death in one of the attacks.

The Israeli defence force said the operation was aimed at a Hamas operative and that it was still assessing the outcome of the strike. Separate incidents on the same day included an air strike on a home in the al-Samar district of central Gaza City that killed four people, and a drone strike on a vehicle in the al-Zahra area south of the city that killed two.

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reported that the death toll from Israeli attacks since the ceasefire took effect in October has risen to at least 1,168 Palestinians, while four Israeli soldiers have been killed in Palestinian attacks in the enclave over the same period. Between 13 and 20 July, a spokesperson for the ministry said 57 Palestinians, including six children and eight women, were killed in strikes on residential buildings, a tent camp for displaced families and other crowded locations.

The spokesperson warned that the continued civilian casualties raise concerns about possible violations of international humanitarian law.
