ESPN announces layoffs linked to NFL Network acquisition

Résumé

ESPN is cutting staff, primarily due to the integration of NFL Network assets acquired by Disney, affecting both behind-the-scenes personnel and on-air talent.

ESPN confirmed a round of job cuts that follow Disney's acquisition of NFL Network and NFL RedZone distribution rights. The layoffs, the first major reductions in three years, were detailed in an internal memo from ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro, who said the majority of the cuts are tied to the recent NFL asset integration.

Pitaro wrote that the company has been evaluating teams, resources and organizational structure to position itself for the future, and that “the strength of ESPN comes from our people, our teamwork and our shared mission to serve sports fans.” He added that the company will treat affected employees with compassion and provide support during the transition.

The reductions also impact on-air talent, with about ten personalities announced as leaving, including NFL analyst Ryan Clark, MLB play-by-play announcer Karl Ravech, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, SportsCenter anchor David Lloyd, injury analyst Stephania Bell, NFL analyst Charles Davis, former quarterback Cam Newton, radio host Bart Scott and combat-sports reporter Andreas Hale.
