FIFA launches disciplinary probe into post-match incident after Spain beats Argentina
FIFA has opened an investigation into the altercation that occurred after the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, appointing a prosecutor to examine possible breaches of its disciplinary code.
FIFA announced on Monday that it will investigate the incident that took place after the World Cup final in which Spain defeated Argentina. The governing body said it had reviewed the match reports and, under Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine any potential violations.
The investigation follows reports of a confrontation involving players from both sides, including Spain’s midfielder Rodri and Argentina’s defender Nicolas Otamendi. While the official FIFA broadcast did not show any physical contact, other footage captured by spectators appears to show a more serious exchange.
FIFA’s statement indicated that the committee will assess all available evidence to determine whether sanctions are warranted. The organization has faced criticism in the past for missing similar incidents on its international feed, such as a bench altercation during the England-Mexico round-of-16 match at the 2026 tournament.
"Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents," FIFA said.
