Man arrested after downtown Tucson shooting injures nine
Police arrested 21-year-old David Leroy French in connection with a downtown Tucson shooting that left nine people critically wounded, and the suspect was also shot by an officer while fleeing.
Police said 21-year-old David Leroy French was taken into custody after a shooting near East Congress and North Sixth Avenue in downtown Tucson early Sunday. The incident resulted in nine victims being shot, all of whom were treated for critical injuries. An officer shot French as he attempted to flee the scene, and he remains in Pima County Jail without bond, facing multiple aggravated assault charges.
"We acted quickly to protect the public and apprehend the suspect," a police spokesperson said. French told investigators he fired a rifle but could not recall targeting anyone, attributing his memory gaps to intoxication at the time of the shooting, court records show. An independent law-enforcement agency has been assigned to investigate the case.
