Man arrested after igniting fireworks and brandishing airsoft guns outside NYC immigration court
A suspect was taken into custody after setting off an incendiary device and threatening pedestrians with airsoft rifles outside a Manhattan immigration court, injuring several people.
A man described as an anti-ICE activist was arrested on Monday after he ignited a fireworks device in a shopping cart and pointed two airsoft rifles at passersby outside the immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza in lower Manhattan. Two individuals received treatment at the scene and a third person is undergoing medical evaluation, according to law-enforcement sources.
The FBI confirmed that an "incendiary device" was set off at the location, which houses a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office, and said its New York Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the investigation. The New York Police Department also reported that fireworks were detonated outside the building.
"I'm relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody. My team is in touch with the NYPD and we will support the federal investigation," New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a post on X, adding that the administration will continue to ensure public safety and hold accountable those who threaten it.
