A gunman opened fire in Tucson's downtown nightlife area early Sunday, wounding ten people before being shot by police while fleeing the scene.

At least ten individuals were wounded after a shooter opened fire in the 100 block of East Congress Street, a downtown Tucson area known for its bars and restaurants, shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, officials said. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, attempted to leave the scene and was shot by a responding police officer, according to the Tucson Police Department. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Mayor Regina Romero reported that nine of the victims sustained gunshot injuries to their arms and legs and that no fatalities were confirmed. She added that officers provided emergency medical aid to the victims before firefighters arrived and transported all of them to hospitals for treatment.

Police said officers on patrol heard multiple shots, pursued the suspect on foot, and fired after he ignored repeated commands. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while the Tucson Police Department will conduct a separate review of its own actions.

Romero also criticized Arizona’s gun-safety regulations, calling for measures such as universal background checks and extreme-risk laws, but no further policy changes were announced at the time.
