McGregor Discloses ACL and Meniscus Tear After UFC 329 Loss

Summary

Conor McGregor confirmed he suffered tears to his ACL and meniscus in his right knee during his defeat to Max Holloway at UFC 329, and said he expects to return by next summer.

Conor McGregor announced on social media that he tore both the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the meniscus in his right knee during his first-round loss to Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas on July 11. He noted that the injury mirrors the one he sustained in his earlier bout with Holloway in 2013, but affected the opposite leg.

"Update: It was ACL and meniscus," McGregor wrote, adding that he is walking without a crutch and has resumed leg-extension exercises without difficulty. He said advances in regenerative medicine and training could allow him to compete again by next summer.

The injury occurred seconds into McGregor’s comeback fight when he landed a jumping switch kick and landed awkwardly, causing his knee to buckle repeatedly before referee Mike Beltran stopped the contest. UFC CEO Dana White later described the injury as severe.

McGregor, who has not fought since November 2016 except for a 40-second knockout of Donald Cerrone in January 2020, holds a career record of 22-7. His recent performance record stands at 1-4 in his last five fights.
