Second Lady Usha Vance Welcomes Fourth Child

Summary

Usha Vance gave birth to a son, Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday, becoming the first woman since the 1870s to have a child while her husband serves as U.S. vice president.

Second Lady Usha Vance delivered a baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday, according to a statement released by Vice President JD Vance’s office on X. The family said both mother and infant are healthy and that the couple’s three older children, ages 4, 6 and 9, are eager to meet their new brother.

Usha Vance, 40, is the first woman in more than a century to give birth while her spouse holds the vice presidency. The Vances announced the pregnancy in January, projecting a late-July due date.

In March, Vice President Vance recalled that he had to persuade his wife to have another child, noting that he chose both the vice-presidential role and a fourth child. He later told NBC News that his wife had not ruled out expanding their family and ultimately decided to proceed.

The birth adds to the Vance family’s four children as the vice president, who is eligible to run for president in 2028, continues his public duties.
