Tate brothers arrested in Miami as federal case proceeds

Summary

Andrew and Tristan Tate were taken into custody in Miami on multiple charges, with a federal hearing scheduled for next week, while President Trump has offered no public comment.

Andrew and Tristan Tate, prominent figures in an online community that overlaps with President Donald Trump’s supporters, were arrested in Miami on Saturday. The brothers face a total of 59 new federal charges, including allegations of abusing women in the United Kingdom between 2010 and 2017. Their detention follows the lifting of Romanian travel restrictions that had been in place for more than a year.

President Trump has not commented on the arrests. When asked about the earlier removal of the travel ban, he said he knew “nothing about that” and that officials would “check it out” and provide an update.

The brothers, who hold both U.S. and British citizenship, were previously detained in Romania in 2022 on human-trafficking, rape and criminal-gang charges. They also face civil lawsuits in the United Kingdom and the United States. Their attorney maintains their innocence and alleges that the United Kingdom breached an agreement with Romania that prohibited extradition while the Romanian cases were pending.

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, who criticized the Tates after their arrival in the state last year, announced a state criminal investigation in March. Reports indicate that the Department of Homeland Security’s anti-trafficking unit has been examining the brothers for several years, though federal officials have not confirmed a probe.

The brothers are scheduled to appear before a federal court in Miami next week.
