Nine injured in early-morning downtown Tucson shooting, suspect detained

摘要

A confrontation between two groups in downtown Tucson resulted in nine adults being shot and a suspect being wounded by police and taken into custody.

Police said gunfire erupted around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the 100 block of East Congress near Sixth Avenue after a clash between two groups. Officers responding to the shots located a suspect fleeing the scene, ordered him to stop and, after he failed to comply, shot him. The suspect and all nine victims, who were adults, were transported to a hospital with injuries described as primarily to their extremities. No law-enforcement officers were injured.

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero called the incident a serious act of gun violence and urged lawmakers to address Arizona’s gun-safety statutes. Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords expressed sorrow over the shooting and thanked first responders. The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team and the Tucson Police Department are conducting separate investigations, and authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the anonymous tip line.
