Microsoft to release Windows 11 2026 Update as enablement package

Summary

The Windows 11 2026 (26H2) update will arrive later this year as a small enablement package, offering the same features as the current 25H2 version but extending the support lifecycle.

Microsoft plans to roll out the Windows 11 2026 Update (version 26H2) later this year, marking the fifth feature update for the operating system. Although marketed as a new release, the update runs on the same platform as version 25H2 and includes the same set of features and improvements, differing mainly in version and build numbers.

The upgrade will be delivered as an Enablement Package, a small update that activates already-included code without requiring a full reinstall. Devices already on 25H2 or 24H2 can apply the package with a single restart, while older Windows 11 builds and Windows 10 will need a standard in-place feature update.

The primary benefit of moving to 26H2 is an extended support window: version 25H2 is supported through October 2027, whereas 26H2 adds another year of updates, with 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. No new hardware requirements are introduced, so any device that runs 25H2 will be compatible.

Microsoft is expected to use its Controlled Feature Rollout system, gradually expanding availability over weeks or months. Users who do not see the update immediately are not experiencing a problem; the rollout is simply progressing to their hardware configuration.

"The enablement package model allows a quicker, less disruptive transition to the latest supported version," a Microsoft spokesperson said.

The update does not add major new capabilities, so there is no urgency to install it immediately, but users should plan to upgrade before 25H2 reaches end-of-support to continue receiving security patches.
